You do not plan a charity shop crawl. That is the received wisdom. You wander, you stumble, you let the day happen.
Lovely idea. It also means you miss half the street and double back with sore feet. Dalston rewards a bit of a plan, and Kingsland High Street packs enough second-hand shops into a short stretch to fill an afternoon.
Start at the top and work down
Begin around Traid, Dalston. It is the most curated stop on the street and the one the magazines keep naming, so it sets the bar for the day. Menswear and denim tend to be strong here.
From there, keep to one side of Kingsland High Street on the way down and the other on the way back, so you cover both without crossing constantly. The independents and the big charity names sit close together, which is the whole appeal.
Pace yourself, and report as you go
Two things separate a good crawl from an exhausting one:
- Do not try to see everything. Pick the shops your Hidden Gem score rates for what you actually collect, and give those proper time.
- Report as you leave each one. Thirty seconds while it is fresh. It makes the map better for the next person walking this exact street, and it sharpens your own scores.
When to go
Weekday mornings are quietest and the rails are fullest, because weekend donations have been sorted and put out. Saturdays are busier and pickier. If you want the good stuff, be the person there when the shop opens, not the one arriving after three coachloads have been through.
After Dalston
If you still have legs, the same approach works in Brixton and around Kentish Town. Different stock, same method: anchor on a strong shop, fan out to the quiet ones nearby, report everything.
Open the map and build your own route.
